The United States and the United Kingdom have urged Belarus to release “political prisoners” and protesters detained for participation in the anti government demonstrations in the country.
Protests erupted in Belarus in mid-August, after incumbent Alexander Lukashenko’s victory in a presidential election. The opposition considers the election was rigged.
