A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan this morning, injuring at least four people.
The temblor, of magnitude 6.9, occurred on the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 40 kilometres.
It measured upper 6, the second-highest level on Japan’s seismic scale of 7, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake was felt across several prefectures, including Tokyo, but no tsunami warning was issued.
Authorities reported no abnormalities at nuclear power plants, and residents have been advised to remain alert for further strong tremors.
