BEST bus employees’ strike enters second day, disrupting public transport in Mumbai.

The strike by BEST bus employees in Mumbai entered its second day today, severely affecting public transport services across the city. According to official figures, only four of the 2,766 buses in the BEST fleet were operating, causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters.

With bus services largely suspended, passengers relied on taxis, auto-rickshaws, local trains and other modes of transport. While many commuters were stranded at bus stops on the first day of the strike, several people made alternative travel arrangements today, and some employees opted to work from home.

Official data showed that only 26 of the 1,937 drivers and nine of the 2,646 conductors reported for duty.

Despite the Maharashtra Government’s warning over possible action under the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA), the striking employees have continued their agitation.

Union representatives said the strike will continue until their key demands, including the merger of the BEST budget with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation budget and implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations, are addressed.
