Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma stated that All India Radio is an important medium for fostering unity among the Zo ethnic groups and serves as a voice for communities across different regions.
While attending the celebration marking the 90th anniversary of All India Radio at Vanapa Hall, Pu Lalduhoma said that AIR has been one of the most significant voices of the people of India for the past 90 years and has remained deeply valued since its establishment.
He noted that its programmes benefit neighbouring countries as well as different states and play a vital role in strengthening unity among the Zo people.
He further remarked that AIR serves as an excellent model for the proper use of the Mizo language, contributing significantly to language preservation and safeguarding important events and records from Mizo history.
The Chief Minister said that All India Radio is not only the largest radio network in India but also one of the largest in the world. He noted that it broadcasts in 23 languages and more than 146 dialects, carries the highest number of multilingual announcements, and can be heard in over 100 countries.
Referring to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s Digital News Report 2024, published by Oxford University, he said Akashvani News was recognised as the most trusted news broadcaster in India, reflecting the confidence and acceptance of people across the country.
Pu Lalduhoma stated that All India Radio played an important role in India’s struggle for Independence and in promoting national unity. He noted that the AIR Aizawl Station was established on 31 July 1966 and served as a crucial source of news and information during periods of unrest.
During curfews, when people could not gather, many listened to hymns and religious songs through the radio. He highlighted the many ways in which AIR Aizawl has continued to serve the people.
The Chief Minister said that many renowned Mizo singers have been AIR artists and that AIR Artist status remains a highly respected distinction.
He added that All India Radio is an important guardian of cultural heritage and continues to provide comfort and connection in an increasingly disconnected world. Concluding his remarks, he congratulated All India Radio on its 90th anniversary and wished it continued success in the years ahead.
As part of the celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of All India Radio, performances by various AIR artists were presented. Attendees also viewed a documentary chronicling AIR’s 90-year journey. In addition, a special felicitation programme was held to honour individuals who have delivered more than 100 broadcasts through All India Radio.
