National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has revealed that nearly 32,000 women have been reportedly abandoned by NRI husbands in Punjab in the last many years. She said this is a growing challenge of NRI marriage fraud in the state.
Taking review meetings with district administration and police officials in Ropar yesterday regarding problems being faced by women, she referred to the available data of abandoned women and called for faster investigations.
She asked for administrative and police support and improved inter-agency coordination and timely legal intervention for these and other affected women.
Earlier, she met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at Chandigarh. Both discussed the growing challenge of substance abuse among girls and women in Punjab and the need for focused interventions to address this emerging social concern.
