Medal rush continues for India at the Commonwealth Games. Boxers Nikhat Zareen, Amit Panghal and Nitu Ghanghas grabbed Gold medals yesterday, while Eldhose Paul bagged yellow metal in triple jump. Sagar Ahlawat got Silver in the men’s 92kg (Super Heavyweight) boxing category. He lost by unanimous decision to Delicious Orie of England in the final.
In Table Tennis, Indian mixed doubles duo of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula bagged the gold medal in the mixed doubles final.
Indian women’s hockey team beat defending champions New Zealand 2-1 in shootout to win the bronze medal and finish its campaign at the Commonwealth Games on a high note.
In Badminton, Indian women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand clinched the bronze medal in the women’s doubles. The duo registered a 2-0 win over Australia’s Wendy Hsuan-Yu Chen and Gronya Somerville. Earlier, Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth won 21-15, 21-18 against Jia Heng Teh in the men’s singles bronze medal.
India’s Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal clinched bronze in the mixed doubles squash event. Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal defeated Australian duo Donna Lobban and Cameron Pilley.
In Women’s Cricket, Australia beat India by nine runs to win the gold medal in the women’s cricket event. Indian women’s cricket team settled for silver medal. Chasing a total of 162 runs, India were all out for 152 in 19.3 overs. For India, captain Harmanpreet Kaur played a gutsy knock of 65 runs who added 96 runs for the third wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues, Jemimah Rodrigues made 33 runs. Earlier, Australia women won the toss and opt to bat. Batting first, Australia scored 161 for 8 in 20 overs with Beth Mooney scored 61 runs. For India, Renuka Singh and Sneh Rana scalped two wickets while Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav took one wicket each.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has Congratulated Sagar Ahlawat for winning a Silver medal at the CWG in Boxing. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, Sagar is among India’s powerhouses in the game and his success will inspire the younger generation of boxers. He hoped that Sagar Ahlawat will continue to make India proud in the times to come.
The Prime Minister said, India is proud of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand for winning the Bronze medal in Badminton Doubles.
He said, before leaving for the CWG, Treesa told him about her friendship with Gayatri but she was not sure about how she will celebrate if she won a medal. Mr Modi hoped that she has made her plans now.
Congratulating Indian Women’s Cricket team on winning Silver medal, the Prime Minister said, Cricket and India are inseparable. He said, our Women’s cricket team played excellent cricket through the CWG and they bring home the prestigious Silver medal. Mr Modi said, being the first ever CWG medal in cricket, this one will always be special. He conveyed best wishes to all team members for a bright future.
The Prime Minister congratulated Kidambi Shrikanth on winning Bronze medal. He said, Kidambi Shrikanth is one of the stalwarts of Indian Badminton. Mr Modi said, this is his fourth CWG medal thus showing his skill and consistency. He hoped that Kidambi Shrikanth will keep inspiring budding athletes and make India even prouder.
Congratulating Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula on winning Gold medal in Table Tennis Mixed Doubles event, Mr Modi said, playing and winning together has its own joys. He said, both players have shown superb teamwork and won the coveted Gold medal. The Prime Minister lauded their grit and tenacity. He said, Sharath reaching the finals of all CWG events he competed in is outstanding.
