Cyclonic Storm Approaching Assam, Meghalaya And Arunachal; IMD Issues Alert.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for several states in the Northeast. A cyclonic circulation has been seen forming over Assam and Bangladesh, due to which there is a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in the northeastern states.

The IMD has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. Strong winds are also likely to blow here on February 6 and 7. Light to moderate rain is possible in these areas between February 8 and 11.

A bulletin from the IMD read: “Light rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh and Dry weather likely to prevail over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.”

“Light snowfall is very likely to occur at isolated pockets in higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh. No large change in minimum temperature is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura,” it added.

Dr. Sen Roy stated that the intensity of rainfall and thunderstorms will be particularly strong in Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam. Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, is expected to continue for the next two days, making the weather conditions potentially hazardous for local populations. The weather disturbances could lead to disruptions in normal life, with chances of landslides, especially in areas that are prone to such events due to the heavy rains.

The IMD has advised people in the affected regions to remain cautious and stay updated on weather forecasts. As thunderstorms and lightning can pose risks to safety, locals are urged to avoid outdoor activities, particularly in areas that may experience the brunt of these conditions. In addition to the thunderstorms, heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods and inundation in certain low-lying areas. The IMD has also issued advisories for travelers in the region to be alert and take necessary precautions, especially while traveling through hilly or mountainous terrains, where the risk of landslides is higher.

Dr. Sen Roy further mentioned that these weather conditions are associated with a low-pressure system that is developing over the Bay of Bengal, which is influencing the weather patterns in the northeastern states. The system is expected to intensify over the next 48 hours, leading to more intense rainfall and stormy conditions in the region. The IMD is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to update the public with regular weather alerts.
