Meghalaya’s week-long celebration of National Handloom culminated today at Ri-Bhoi district.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated a Centre of Excellence that would help in preserving and passing on the skill and tradition of Eri silk weaving to future generations. It is aimed at promoting skill development and innovation in the sector.
The Meghalaya government’s Textiles Department celebrated the 12th National Handloom Day at Risai, Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex (ITTC), Nongpoh, paying tribute to the dedication and craftsmanship of the state’s handloom weavers who have played a vital role in preserving and promoting Meghalaya’s rich indigenous textile traditions.
The celebration highlighted the importance of handwoven fabrics, particularly the renowned Eri silk, also called Ryndia, which represents much more than a traditional textile.
Every handwoven piece carries its own story through its colours, patterns and designs, reflecting the cultural identity and rich heritage of Meghalaya while also showcasing the craftsmanship of local artisans to a wider audience.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing handloom products and creations by weavers from different parts of Meghalaya.
He also inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for weaving and handloom-related activities, aimed at further promoting skill development and innovation in the sector.
