Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh welcomed the move of the Central government to reduce disturbed areas under Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in Manipur.
The Disturbed Area Declaration has been in force in entire Manipur (except Imphal Municipality area) since 2004. Taking an important step under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 15 police station areas of 6 districts of Manipur will be excluded from the Disturbed Area Notification with effect from tomorrow.
Speaking to AIR News exclusively a little while ago, Biren said that due to the consistent efforts of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the law and order and security situation in Manipur has improved significantly. He also thanked the people of Manipur and all stakeholders for bringing in normalcy which resulted in the reduction of disturbed areas under the Act.
He also hoped that the Central government would consider more reduction of disturbed areas under the Act in the future.
The Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Dr. RK. Ranjan also expressed happiness on the move of the Central government. Speaking to AIR News, Dr. Ranjan said that the entire North East region has moved forward to development and peace.
