The Election Commission of India (ECI) dismissed accusations from Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar illegally and unilaterally changed Form 6 for voter registration.
Rahul Gandhi’s Accusations. He stated on social media that the Chief Election Commissioner changed Form 6 to help the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He called the alleged modification a “criminal assault” on Indian democracy. His comments followed a Supreme Court hearing where the court clarified it had not approved any modification to Form 6.
Election Commission’s Response. The Election Commission of India stated that Rahul Gandhi’s claims are misleading. The poll panel clarified that Form 6 was never altered or changed.
According to the ECI, a separate declaration was attached to the form only for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar.
The ECI maintained that the Bihar SIR order was approved unanimously by the commission on June 24, 2025, and later upheld by the Supreme Court on May 27, 2026.
BJP and Supreme Court Stance. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra stated that Rahul Gandhi misled the public. The BJP noted that the Supreme Court did not declare Form 6 illegal, but only agreed to examine the matter.
The Supreme Court sought official records to see who authorized the changes while noting it did not give formal approval to modify the form.
