US sanctions on Iran will not be lifted for talks: Biden

US President Joe Biden has said that he will not lift sanctions against Iran until it complies with the terms agreed under a 2015 nuclear deal and stops enriching uranium beyond the limits of the deal.

Yesterday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the United States must lift all sanctions before Tehran reverses any nuclear production steps. He said, if they want Iran to return to its Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) commitments, the US should lift all sanctions in action.

The Trump administration reimposed sanctions on Iran in 2018 after pulling the United States out of the international accord aimed at curtailing Tehran’s nuclear program. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is peaceful, has been increasing its stockpile of enriched uranium.

Enriched uranium can be used to make reactor fuel, but also nuclear bombs.
