Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall since yesterday, with intense showers continuing across the city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Several parts of Mumbai recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. today.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and the Konkan region for today, while a Red Alert has been sounded for Ratnagiri. The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across these regions until July 5.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour, and heavy rainfall over Mumbai, Thane and Palghar today.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. today. Powai received the highest rainfall at 118 mm, followed by Vikhroli and Andheri.
The heavy downpour led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai, including Andheri and Dadar, disrupting traffic and daily life. In neighbouring Thane, traffic movement on the Shil Phata Road was severely affected due to extensive waterlogging.
Heavy rain also reduced visibility across several parts of Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, affecting vehicular movement.
The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Palghar district for tomorrow, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall. In view of the warning, the Palghar district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges tomorrow.
