As cases rise Delhi crematoriums struggle to keep up with COVID-19 deaths

Even as COVID-19 cases rose unabated in the last few weeks in India, the country saw the highest number of cases ever on Wednesday with a biggest-ever single-day spike with 184,372 fresh cases. The total COVID-19 tally shot up to 13,873,825 cases.

This is the second-highest number of cases a country has ever registered in one day. The only country to have recorded a higher number of cases in a single day was the US, which had registered 3.09 lakh cases on January 8 of this year.

Meanwhile Delhi crematoriums and graveyards were struggling to keep up with the rising Covid-19 deaths. At Delhi’s biggest crematorium, Nigambodh Ghat, the number of cremations have gone up from 15 per day to over 30 as COVID-19-related deaths in the national capital continue to rise.

Delhi recorded 104 deaths due to coronavirus on Wednesday, the highest since November 20. The same day, India recorded 1,027 deaths, the highest daily count since October 18 when 1,033 deaths were recorded.
