In Madhya Pradesh, the state cabinet today approved the draft of the bill on Uniform Civil Code.
The Cabinet meeting was held at Jagdishpur in Bhopal under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. The bill will be presented in the monsoon session of the state Assembly starting tomorrow.
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said, the UCC will give equal status to everyone in the state. He said, before implementing this law, feedback was taken from the public for two months, a six-member committee was formed and opinions were taken from all sections of society.
Dr. Yadav said, a total of 9 lakh 58 thousand suggestions were received and more than 93 per cent of people supported this law. He also said, 80 per cent of Muslim women and 40 per cent of Muslim men have also demanded a common law.
Under the key provisions of UCC, more than one marriage will not be valid in the state. Divorce will have to follow a legal process. Women and men will get equal inheritance rights.
Registration of live-in relationships will be mandatory within one month. Marriage registration will be compulsory up to the village level. Tribal communities have been kept outside the scope of this law.
