J&K. Unintentional blast at Srinagar, Nowgam police station. Multiple casualties feared.

An accidental blast ripped through the Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday night as personnel were taking samples of explosive material seized from Faridabad in a white-collar terror module case.

At least eight personnel were seriously injured, officials said.

The 360 kilograms of explosive material had been recovered from the rented home of Dr Muzzamil Ganaie in Faridabad. He is one of the eight people arrested so far in the case, PTI reported.

The probe began after threatening posters appeared in Nowgam in mid-October, following which CCTV analysis led to the arrest of three local residents.

Their questioning brought the role of Maulvi Irfan Ahmad to light and subsequently took investigators to Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where two doctors were arrested and 360 kg of suspected ammonium nitrate, along with other IED-making material, was seized.

Around the same time, agencies also recovered about 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate and related components from two rented rooms in Faridabad linked to a Pulwama-based doctor, helping investigators piece together a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed module.

Eyewitnesses and CCTV clips from the area show the blast ripping through the station in the early hours between Friday night and Saturday, with smoke and flames shooting into the air.

J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat carried out a hybrid security review across the Union Territory on Friday evening as agencies stepped up safety measures following the Delhi blast. There are chances of the personnel suffering multiple casualties in thus incident.
