Former Punjab Congress Chief Sunil Jakhar joins BJP

Former Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar today joined Bharatiya Janata Party days after quitting the Congress party. Mr Jakhar quit Congress weeks after he was issued a show-cause notice by the Congress leadership over his criticism of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

BJP National President J. P. Nadda inducted him into the party. Welcoming Jakhar into the party, Mr Nadda said that he would play a critical role for BJP in Punjab.

While speaking to media persons, Mr Jakhar said, Congress’s coterie has now turned into a gang. He said that he was sidelined because he pointed out that the party can’t treat Punjab in percentages and divide people over caste and religion. He said that he has left the Congress on fundamental issues not because of any personal dispute.

He said, in Congress, there is an element of casteism, but BJP has equality for all. Mr Jakhar said that he had got an opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Parliament and at the time of inauguration of Kartarpur Corridor. He said that he had dreamt that Punjab be given the status of special state and he felt, Prime Minister had practically given special status to Punjab.
