With no let-up in the Assam’s COVID-19 scene, the tally of positive cases reached 6,646 on Thursday even as in the last 24 hours altogether 75 patients were discharged.
In Guwahati, where the situation continued to be serious, the Health Department activated 31 counselling centres, one in each ward.
“We have activated all 31 COVID Counselling Centres in each and every ward of Guwahati Municipal Corporation. I urge citizens of Guwahati to use these facilities and come forward for voluntary testing,” Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
These centres will act as mini-hospitals where a doctor, nurses and para-medic staff are being deployed. Besides swab collection, the centres will act as one stop point for COVID-19 counseling, medical examination, shifting of positive cases to isolation centres and dissemination of information regarding COVID-19. Thirty one schools have been requisitioned for the purpose.
The city’s COVID-19 graph dropped a little on Wednesday as the number of cases detected on the day was 53. A day before yesterday it was 102 and on Monday it was 93.
Minister of State for Health Pijush Hazarika who visited the screening centres in the city made a fresh appeal to the people in the city to be extremely careful.
“In the last three days, we got over 300 cases in Guwahati. I appeal to the people to cooperate and follow the precautionary measures, or else the situation would deteriorate further,” Hazarika said, informing that over 2,000 tests are being conducted in the city every day. The Health Department aims to conduct 50,000 tests in the city by June end.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri Prakash Ranjan Gharphalia has also tested positive for the virus. Health officials said he was in home quarantine for the last few days after some district officials had tested positive for the coronavirus. Gharphalia was today shifted to GMCH.
