Assam flood scene worsens, death toll rises to 76

The flood situation of Assam was still grim, with over 35 lakh people affected by the deluge in 28 districts. The death toll, meanwhile, reached 76, with five fatalities reported on Friday, one each at Dhubri, Darrang, Bongaigaon, Goalpara and Kamrup.

Over 51,000 people are currently taking shelter at 711 relief camps.

While the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur), Goalpara and Dhubri, the Dhansiri is flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh (Golaghat), the Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing (Sonitpur), the Kopili at Dharamtul (Nagaon), the Beki at Road Bridge (Barpeta), the Barak at AP Ghat (Cachar) and Badarpurghat (Karimganj), and the Kushiyara at Karimganj.

The Brahmaputra, however, has come down below the danger level at Guwahati.

A total of 3,014 villages remain affected by the floods across the State. The area of cropland affected is around 1.28 lakh hectares.
