Second seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia stormed into the French Open men’s singles quarter-finals for the first time and will clash with Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas for a place in the last four. Medvedev defeated Cristian Garin of Chile 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 in his last 16 tie while Tsitsipas beat Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-2 7-5 to advance into the quarter-finals.
World No.46 Spaniard Davidovich Fokina reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Federico Delbonis of Argentina.
Earlier, 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament as a precautionary measure to rest despite reaching the fourth round after defeating Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.
Indian player Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Franko Skugor reached the quarterfinals. The duo was set to take on Matwe Middelkoop and Marcelo Arevalo, but made it to the last eight stage, after their opponents withdrew before the match. The Indo-Croatian pair will now face Pablo Andujar and Pedro Martinez in the quarterfinals today.
In the women’s fixture, Serena Williams’ latest quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title ended with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat by Kazakh 21st seed Elena Rybakina in the last 16. The exit of Williams leaves just two of the women’s top 10 seeds in the competition, reigning champion Iga Swiatek and last year’s runner-up Sofia Kenin.
For 21-year-old Rybakina enters the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. She will next face Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who defeated former world number one Victoria Azarenka 5-7 6-3 6-2.
Tamara Zidansek became the first woman from Slovenia to reach the singles quarter-finals of a Grand Slam with a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over unseeded Romanian. World number 85, Zidansek will now face Spain’s Paula Badosa in the last eight, who beat former finalist Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
