Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh to inculcate sporting culture and establish world-class sporting infrastructure in the country. Addressing a huge public meeting, Mr. Modi said, Meerut has shown to the world, whether it is by giving life for the country or earning honour for the country through sports, it is always there to inspire and lead the nation.
He said every year more than a thousand of our sons and daughters will become successful in the field of sports from Meerut. Mr. Modi said, Meerut has also been the birthplace of another great child of the country, Major Dhyan Chand Ji, and a few months back, the central government had named the country’s biggest sports award after Him. Prime Minister said, Meerut was Major Dhyan Chand’s karmsthal.
Mr. Modi said, earlier, daughters in Meerut used to be afraid to go out after dark but today they are the ones leaving a mark and making the country proud.
The Sports University will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town at an estimated cost of about 700 Crore rupees. The Sports University will be equipped with modern and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure including synthetic Hockey ground, Football ground, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Kabaddi ground, Lawn tennis court, Gymnasium hall, Synthetic running stadium, Swimming pool, Multipurpose hall, and a Cycling Velodrome. The university will also house facilities for Shooting, Squash, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Archery, Canoeing, and Kayaking, among other facilities.
