Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Pabitra Margherita and Rwngwra Narzary of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on Monday took oath as members of the Rajya Sabha in the upper house of parliament. Apart from them, Nagaland BJP’s candidate S Phangnon Konyak also took oath as a Member of Parliament in the upper House. Rajya Sabha Chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu administered the oath to the newly elected/nominated members of Rajya Sabha.
Taking to the micro-blogging site, Assam Chief Minister Himanata Biswa Sarma congratulated both Rajya Sabha MPs. “Heartiest congratulations Shri @PmargheritaBJP & Shri Rwngwra Narzary on being sworn in as Members of Rajya Sabha. With your wisdom & commitment to public service, I am sure you will raise the bar of debate in the Upper House, besides serving as the voice of the people of Assam,” he tweeted.
BJP candidate Pabitra Margherita secured 46 votes while its ally party UPPL’s candidate Rwngwra Narzary secured 44 votes. Additionally, three newly-elected Rajya Sabha MPs such as Jebi Mather Hisham (Congress, Kerala); Sandosh Kumar (CPI, Kerala), and A A Rahim (CPI-M, Kerala) also took oath in the House. However, Congress couldn’t retain the seat and had to settle with 35 votes. The two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam went to the polls on April 31.
