A new hospital is set to be built in Melbourne under what the Victorian Government is claiming is “the biggest hospital project in Australia’s history”.
Premier Daniel Andrews has revealed a medical precinct will be built in North Melbourne alongside the new Arden train station, which is part of the under-construction Metro Tunnel Project.
The new facility will be part of a $5-to-$6billion expansion of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital.
Construction on the new hospital will begin 2025, when the Metro Tunnel is finished, with stage one of the hospital to be completed in 2031.
Patients will be treated at the new hospital while the the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital are refurbished.
One construction is finished, planned surgeries will take place at the Arden campus, while the Parkville hospitals will be dedicated to emergency care.
