The U.S. Supreme Court gave President Donald Trump another major win, allowing his administration to move forward with sweeping federal job cuts.
The ruling overrode lower court orders that had paused the layoffs, which are being driven by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), initially led by billionaire Elon Musk. The decision which came yesterday, allows terminations to proceed while legal challenges continue.
No specific roles were cited in the case, only Trump’s executive order and DOGE’s directive. The Supreme Court has recently backed several Trump administration actions, including those permitting migrant deportations without hearings and banning transgender individuals from military service. By April 2025, DOGE-led efforts led to over 260,000 federal workers leaving their posts.
In a brief unsigned order, the court said the Trump administration was “likely to succeed” in its argument that his directives were legally within his power.
The decision is the latest win for Trump’s broader efforts to consolidate power in the executive branch. The Supreme Court has sided with Trump in several cases on an emergency basis since he returned to office in January, including clearing the way for implementation of some of his hardline immigration policies.
