School’s out for thousands of kids across the UK as power cuts, blocked roads and icy conditions caused by heavy snow continue in the North.

The RAC declared today ‘ice rink Monday’ due to ‘very treacherous icy conditions’ in northern areas, telling drivers to ‘delay or even abandon journeys’ if possible.

Nearly 50 schools are closed in Cumbria, where a ‘major incident’ was declared due to heavy snowfall this weekend, with a handful more closed in northern England and Wales.

Yellow weather warnings are in place for ice across northern England, snow and ice in eastern Scotland,and rain in south-west England.

A man believed to be sleeping rough was found dead in Manchester yesterday, and is the second person to have died during the ongoing wave of cold weather.

The Met Office has said people in northern and central parts of the UK should expect more snow and ice, especially this morning, while milder wet and windy weather is on the way elsewhere.

The Met Office has issued flood warnings issued for 31 locations across southern England and the Midlands.

The warnings, which mean forecasters expect flooding to occur on Monday, are particularly concentrated in Dorset, but have also been issued in places in Somerset, the West Midlands and Nottinghamshire.

Flooding has already begun in some of locations, with National Highways warning that parts of the A303 and A359 in Somerset have been closed due to floodwater.

The Met Office says there is a risk of properties being flooded across southern England.

A total of 114 flood alerts – meaning flooding is ‘possible’ – have also been issued.

The Met added: ‘Local flooding is also possible from rivers and surface water more widely across the South of England on Sunday and Monday, in Yorkshire and the Humber and North East England on Monday and Tuesday, and in the West Midlands and the North of England on Thursday.

‘Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.’
