A New Jersey man, Hadi Matar, has been convicted of attempted murder and assault for the stabbing of renowned British-Indian author Salman Rushdie.
The attack took place during a lecture in New York in August 2022, leaving Rushdie with severe injuries, including damage to his liver, loss of vision in one eye, and paralysis in one hand due to nerve damage.
The attack also resulted in injuries to the interviewer, Henry Reese, who was on stage with Rushdie. Reese sustained a minor head injury during the incident.
The jury in Chautauqua County Court in New York delivered the guilty verdict yesterday following a two-week trial. Matar now faces a sentence of more than 30 years in prison, along with federal terrorism-related charges. His sentencing is scheduled for April 23.
