A Khorramshahr-4 missile is launched at an undisclosed location in Iran.
Iran has launched attacks in Pakistan targeting what it described as bases for the militant group Jaish al-Adl. The strike comes as the US launched more attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen.
The Iranian state-run IRNA news agency said missiles and drones were used on Tuesday (local time) in the attack, which was not immediately acknowledged by Pakistan.
Jaish al-Adl is a Sunni militant group which largely operates across the border in nuclear-armed Pakistan. It has previously mounted attacks on Iranian security forces in the border area with Pakistan.
“These bases were hit and destroyed by missiles and drones,” Iranian state media reported, without elaborating.
Iran’s Nournews, affiliated with the country’s top security body, said the attacked bases were located in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.
Jan Achakzai, information minister of Pakistan’s Balochistan province, which borders Iran, declined to confirm or deny the attack. “Wait for the response of ISPR,” he said, referring to the Pakistani military’s public relations wing.
The strikes came at a time of heightened tensions in the region and fears of a wider spillover of the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
Late Monday, Iran fired missiles into Iraq at what it called an Israeli “spy headquarters” near the US Consulate compound in the city of Irbil, the seat of Iraq’s northern semi-autonomous Kurdish region, and at targets linked to the extremist Islamic State group in northern Syria.
Iraq recalled its ambassador from Tehran for consultations and summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Baghdad on Tuesday in protest over Iranian strikes on northern Iraq that killed several civilians overnight, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said.
The Iranian attack was “a blatant violation” of Iraq’s sovereignty and “strongly contradicts the principles of good neighbourliness and international law, and threatens the security of the region,” the ministry said in a statement.
The US launched a new strike against the Yemen-based Houthis, hitting anti-ship missiles in the third assault on the Iranian-backed group in recent days, the US military said.
The strike came as the Iranian-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile attack against the Malta-flagged bulk carrier Zografia, also on Tuesday, in the Red Sea.
The ship was hit, but no one was injured. The vessel had been heading north to the Suez Canal when it was attacked, the Greek Shipping and Island Policy Ministry said.
According to a US Central Command statement, the overnight strike destroyed four Houthi ballistic missiles that were prepared to launch and presented an imminent threat to merchant and US Navy ships in the region.
The Houthi attack on the Zografia occurred later Tuesday and involved an anti-ship ballistic missile, the statement said, adding that the ship continued its Red Sea transit.
