IMD warns of heavy rain in Mumbai, adjoining areas during weekend

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in Konkan region, including Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts till 15th June. IMD Scientist KS Hosalikar said the region is likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, increasing to extremely heavy rainfall in some areas. He said a red remains in place, urging people not venture out of their homes unless urgent.

In view of severe weather warnings, especially for 13th and 14th June, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has asked disaster management authorities, fire brigade, BEST and other power supply companies and relief and rehabilitation authorities to remain on high . The civic body has asked the education department to identify locations for emergency shelters across all 34 wards.

A statement informs that MCGM is also coordinating with NDRF, Coast Guard and Navy, in case evacuations need to be made, especially from the banks of Mithi river.
