A civilian, identified as Ghulam Rasool Magray, was killed by unidentified gunmen in north Kashmir’s Kupwara on Saturday night.
Police officers said the unidentified gunmen barged into Ghulam Rasool Magray’s house in the Kani Khas area on Saturday night and opened fire at him.
The gunmen fled after the shooting, and Magray was left critically wounded and was rushed to the District Hospital, Handwara. After initial treatment at the hospital, he was referred to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials said 44-year-old Magray was hit in the abdomen and wrist. Police have initiated investigations into the killing. The shooting incident took place while the Valley is on high security alert after the Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 tourists and a local man were killed on Tuesday.
Security forces have launched a massive crackdown against militants across the Kashmir Valley in the wake of the attack in Pahalgam. Several have been detained and houses of alleged militant sympathisers have been raided. Over the last four days, police have detained over 2,000 people from across the Valley.
