West Bengal. 2 police personnel injured as under-trial accused snatches firearm & fires.

In West Bengal, two police personnel were injured allegedly by an under-trial accused, while going to Raiganj correctional home in Uttar Dinajpur district yesterday.

The accused named Sajjad Alam had allegedly snatched a firearm from the police and fired at them. The Islampur SP, Joby Thomas informed the media that three accused, two female and one male were returning from a court at Islampur town towards the Raiganj correctional home when the male accused snatched the arm and escaped from the scene after firing.

State police have alerted the Bihar police as the crime scene is near the Bihar border. The injured police personnel, one ASI and one constable are being treated at the hospital.

The incident took place on Wednesday near Panjipara in Goalpokhar when two undertrial prisoners overpowered the policemen escorting them, snatched their service revolvers, and fired before fleeing. The injured officers, assistant sub-inspector Deben Baishya and constable Nilkanta Sarkar, are currently undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Siliguri’s Matigara area.

On Thursday morning, DGP Kumar visited the injured officers at the hospital and held a closed-door meeting with senior police officials, including the inspector general of North Bengal, the Siliguri police commissioner, and SPs from various districts. After the meeting, he visited the site of the attack to review the situation.
