In Jammu and Kashmir, seven members of a family died after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall flattened their house in a remote village in the Reasi district early today.
Rescue teams, including personnel from the police, SDRF, and local administration, were dispatched immediately, and all bodies have been recovered. The district administration has appealed to residents living in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain alert, and avoid staying in vulnerable structures during periods of heavy rain.
At least 11 people have died and many went missing in Jammu and Kashmir after fresh landslides and cloudbursts triggered by incessant rainfall battered large parts of the Union Territory on Saturday, officials confirmed.
In Reasi district, seven members of a family were killed after their house collapsed due to a landslide early on Friday. Bodies of all seven members, including five children (aged 4,6,8,10,12), were retrieved from the debris of the kaccha house on Saturday morning.
In Ramban, four people lost their lives and four others went missing after a cloudburst in the higher reaches of Rajgarh unleashed flash floods. The gushing waters swept away houses, damaged several structures, and left some completely washed off, according to officials. Rescue and relief operations are in progress.
The District Administration of Ramban has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rain, thundershowers and intense showers in the district from the late night of August 30 to September 2. The advisory cautions about the possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides.
The death toll from this week’s floods, landslides and heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir has risen to 56, with 54 deaths reported from the Jammu division and 2 from the Kashmir division.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed the incident in Ramban and said that every possible assistance was being provided to those affected.
“Just now spoke to DC Ramban Mohammad Alyas Khan. Cloudburst in Rajgarh area resulting in the unfortunate casualty of four persons. The fifth one is missing and the search is going on. Meanwhile, there is no injured. Rescue operation is on. Every possible assistance being provided. I am in constant touch,” Singh said in a post on X.
Ramban is located around 136 km from Srinagar.
