Schools in Jammu Division Directed to Ensure Safety Protocols Amid Heavy Rain and Storms.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the Directorate of School Education Jammu has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors during inclement weather conditions. All the Heads of Institutions in the Jammu division are directed to strictly implement some SOPs, including vigilance and safety of students, and precautions for schools near water bodies.

The SOPs directed all the Heads of Institutions to conduct regular inspections of school premises, including buildings, boundary walls, roofs and electrical systems, to identify and immediately address potential hazards.

It also prohibits students from assembling in open grounds, under trees, or near electrical poles during storms, heavy rainfall, or lightning. The heads are also directed to maintain updated contact details of parents and guardians for emergency communication and inform them promptly when necessary.

Moreover, schools located near rivers, streams, canals, or ponds were asked to exercise heightened caution during heavy rain or flood warnings. Identify and communicate evacuation routes to staff and students in advance. Spend outdoor activities in low-lying or flood-prone areas during inclement weather. Coordinate with local administration and disaster management authorities for timely alerts and support.

The heads are personally accountable for ensuring compliance with these safety protocols. Each school must establish a Safety Committee to monitor preparedness, guide students, and report incidents immediately.

Any negligence or lapse in implementing these SOPs will be treated seriously, with Heads of Institutions held solely responsible. The schools are also directed to educate students on safety measures and procedures to follow during inclement weather to ensure preparedness and awareness. These SOPs are designed to prioritise the safety and well-being of all school community members.
