Relief and rescue work continues in Sikkim as many areas remain cut-off following flash floods in Teesta river.

Updated, Oct. 04, 2023. 8.53 PM. Updating on damages caused by rising water levels along the Teesta river basin, Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) has informed that in Pakyong district, 59 people have been reported missing including 23 Army personnel, while five people were confirmed dead. Singtam and Rangpo sewage treatment plants have been severely damaged.

Relief camps have been set up at various schools; Majhi Gaon Housing Complex; Sikkim Distilleries, Rangpo; Tourist Information Center; and Nepali Dharamshala, Golitar.

In Mangan district, Chungthang remains cut off due to the Toong bridge collapse. Chungthang Sikkim Urja Dam has been washed away while 80 percent of Chungthang town has been severely affected, including disruption of drinking water supply.

In Mangan district, Several bridges including those at Phidang, Minshithang, and Sangkhalang have collapsed while houses have been washed away at Phidang and Dikchu. Four deaths have been recorded while 14 are reportedly missing in the Mangan district. Connectivity to the district’s Dzongu region is severely affected.

Relief camps have been set up at Chandey, Chungthang, and Naga where 20 families have been relocated. In Gangtok district, the Indreni and LD Kazi bridges on the Teesta River connecting Singtam to Aadharsh Gaon and Namchi district were washed away. Singtam and Rangpo towns have been affected. 25 people have been rescued by SDRF.

Relief camps have been set up at Dikchu Government Senior Secondary School; Serwani Government School; Singtam Senior Secondary School; Bihari Bhawan, Singtam; Nepali Bhawan; Singtam and Fruit Preservation Factory; and Sikkim Supreme, Singtam. Around 300 people have been relocated to Singtam Government Senior Secondary School.

In Namchi district, two labourers were reported to be swept away from Mamring. Relief camps have been set up at Namphing Parnami Mandir, Bhawana Educational Institute, and the Handmade Paper Unit Office at Melli.
