The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the murder of a retired Sub-Inspector of Police in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district by a group of four individuals.
According to the report, the victim was an activist who had been pursuing legal cases against the encroachment of Waqf land in the area and had reportedly been receiving death threats.
He also alleged that the police were not taking appropriate action against the threats due to their alleged collusion with the perpetrators.
Observing the seriousness of the matter, the Commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu and the District Collector of Tirunelveli, seeking a detailed report within four weeks.
