India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for heavy rainfall and snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab till Saturday. Indicating a yellow alert, the weather agency has predicted hailstorm over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh till tomorrow.
It has forecast intense spell of rainfall and snowfall over Western Himalayan Region and rainfall over plains of northwest India over the next two days. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh.
Thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Odisha for the next three to four days. Isolated hailstorm is also likely over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh tomorrow. IMD said that light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning is likely over Northeast India from Sunday onwards.
Talking to Akashvani News, Senior IMD scientist, R.K. Jenamani said that heavy rain and snow is likely to impact travel activities in the North Indian regions including Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand. He also said that the Northern plains are also likely to be effected due to the prevailing Western Disturbance till tomorrow.
