The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a Red Alert for Assam for today and tomorrow as the India Meteorological Department predicted extreme, very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms across the state, including in Guwahati. The Ministry has asked the State Government to ensure the safety of the people.
Despite the rainfall, hot and humid conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures reaching 37 to 38 degrees Celsius but feeling like 46 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, 10 villages of Biswanath and Lakhimpur districts are still reeling under flood. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in a statement said the weather pattern indicated that heavy to very heavy rainfall was expected in isolated areas across various districts over the next two to three days, potentially exacerbating waterlogging, impeding vehicular movement, and increasing the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable regions.
It added that local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with emergency response systems on standby.Following recent incidents of flooding, landslides, and water blockages caused by intense rainfall, the ASDMA called on residents to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant.”Daily commuters and long- distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides.
Residents in vulnerable areas are further advised to keep adequate stock of essential items such as medicines, candles etc,” the ASDMA urged people.ASDMA provided contact numbers (0361-1070, 0361-1079, 0361-112) and DDMA (0361-1077) for assistance and urged the people to stay informed by following official weather updates and adhering to advisories from local authorities to ensure safety during the prolonged rainy period.
ASDMA also advised people living in the identified landslide-prone vulnerable areas of the state to shift themselves to safe shelters (relief camps) or other safer places of their choice for the next three days.
“The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain. The status of the situation would be updated by ASDMA from time to time for general awareness,” it added.
