Chandigarh borders sealed, police deployed to stop farmers’ march.

All borders of the Union Territory of Chandigarh have been sealed and a police force has been deployed to stop the march of protesting farmers. Chandigarh Police has made elaborate security arrangements on its border with Punjab to stop farmers from entering the city. Many farmers who were moving towards Chandigarh in small groups have been stopped by the police at checkpoints installed on nearly all state and national highways. The Chandigarh Police has also issued an advisory to commuters to avoid some routes.

Superintendent of Chandigarh Police, Geetanjali Khandelwal has said that all borders leading to the city have been barricaded. She has said that no arrest has been made so far, however, checking is going on.

Meanwhile, DIG Ropar Range, Harcharan Singh Bhullar has said that farmers will not be allowed to enter Chandigarh at any cost. There is good coordination between Punjab and Chandigarh Police. All traffic routes towards Chandigarh are open. Punjab is peaceful. He said some people have been rounded up.

On Monday, farmer unions were invited for talks with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann at Chandigarh to resolve their issues, but the meeting remained inconclusive.

Punjab Chief Minister had categorically told farmers that his doors are always open for talks with the farmers but inconvenience and harassment of the general public under the pretext of agitation should be avoided.
