Days after suggesting that the real danger of nuclear war “should not be underestimated,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia does not consider itself to be at war with NATO, according to Russian state media.
Lavrov said Friday that if Russia considered itself at war with NATO, that would only increase the likelihood of nuclear war, which it doesn’t want, according to state news agency Ria Novosti. Instead, he claimed it was Western nations, not Russia, that were using the threat of nuclear war.
“We don’t think we’re at war with NATO,” he said. “Unfortunately, NATO believes it is at war with Russia.”
Earlier this week, Lavrov told Russian state media that “the danger is serious” of nuclear war.
“It is real,” he said. “It should not be underestimated.”
Lavrov also blamed the stalled peace talks with Ukraine on Kyiv, saying officials there were “constantly [playing] games,” according to Ria.
