The Government today launched the Kanda Express Train from Nashik to Delhi to meet the onion demand before Diwali. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare today announced that the special train will arrive on the 20th of this month in the national capital, carrying one thousand 600 metric tonnes of onions.
Upon arrival, the onion consignment will be distributed to wholesale mandis across Delhi-NCR. The Secretary added that more Kanda Express trains will soon be departed to Lucknow, Varanasi and different parts of North-East.
The government is in talks with e-commerce platforms and retail chains for retail distribution of onions. One thousand additional mobile vans will also be deployed to deliver subsidised onions to retail markets.
Talking to Akashwani News, National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited – NCCF Managing Director, Anice Joseph Chandra highlighted that the high volume consignment can meet 50 percent of daily onion requirement in the national capital.
