Domestic benchmark equity indices today extended gains for the third straight session, driven by a rally in heavyweight stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex surged 598 points, or 0.74 percent, to close at 80,846 and the NSE Nifty50 advanced 181 points, or 0.75 percent, to settle at 24,457.
The broader market at the Bombay Stock Exchange also ended in positive territory. The Mid-Cap index ended over 0.9 percent up, and the Small-Cap index climbed over one percent.
In the Sensex index, 25 out of 30 companies logged gains. Among the top gainers, Adani Ports surged over six percent, NTPC jumped more than two and a half percent, and SBI Bank climbed over 2.1 percent. Conversely, in the top laggards, Bharti Airtel shed over 1.4 percent, ITC fell over one percent, and SunPharma dropped over half percent.
In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 18 out of 20 sectors ended with gains. Among the top gainers, Services surged over two percent, Utilities gained 1.4 percent, and Industrials added over 1.3 percent. Conversely, in the top laggards, FMCG lost over 0.3 percent and Telecommunication was marginally down by 0.05 percent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,739 companies advanced and 1,220 declined while 108 remained unchanged. At the National Stock Exchange, 108 companies hit their 52-week high while 12 hit their 52-week low.
