West Bengal. Alipurduar administration on high alert as Sankosh river water level rises.

The water level of the Sankosh River in Alipurduar continues to remain below the danger mark, bringing some relief to residents living along its banks.

However, the district administration is maintaining strict vigilance as a precautionary measure. Although residents of riverside areas were kept in relief camps on Friday, some have already returned to their homes.

The precautionary evacuation was carried out on Thursday night following reports of a glacial lake breach in Bhutan, which raised fears of possible flooding in areas along the Sankosh River.

More than seven thousand people were evacuated and accommodated in eighteen relief camps. Several residents from neighbouring Assam also took shelter in relief camps in Kumargram, near the Assam border in Alipurduar district.

Although the river’s water level rose slightly on Friday afternoon, officials said it was still below the danger mark and had not reached an alarming level.

The administration continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of people living in vulnerable areas.
