The Supreme Court of India issued formal notices to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Centre, refusing an immediate plea to suspend Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of unilateral decision-making.
Notices Issued. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant issued notices to the ECI, CEC Gyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
No Interim Suspension. The apex court declined the interim plea seeking the suspension of [CEC Gyanesh Kumar](index:0.6.5, 0.6.9), noting that action could not be taken without examining official records.
Unanimity and Majority Rule. The bench emphasized that all decisions by the poll panel must be unanimous or made by a majority of its members, warning that any unilateral decisions violating the law will be annulled.
Form 6 Clarification.
The court clarified that it never formally approved the modified Form 6 declarations linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), pushing back against previous assertions cited by the poll body.
The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to produce official files and records regarding the disputed SIR decisions and modifications to voter registration forms within one week.
