The West Bengal government has begun the process of identifying land for the proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport project, aimed at reducing the pressure on Kolkata Airport and further expanding air connectivity in South Bengal.
Around 2,000 acres of land across nine mouzas, including Kalyani and Birpara, have been identified in the Nadia district. The administration has also temporarily stopped registration of land sale and purchase documents in these areas.
The state government had announced the greenfield airport project in its budget this year. It is planned along the lines of the Navi Mumbai Greenfield Airport.
The Detailed Project Report and construction schedule will be finalised after completion of land acquisition and other administrative processes.
In the meantime, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari yesterday announced that the state government will sign an MoU with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 28th September for the development of four airports under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme UDAN.
The proposed development process will be taken up at Chharra in Purulia, Balurghat in South Dinajpur, Hasimara in Alipurduar and Kalaikunda in West Midnapore. The state government will hand over the required land to the AAl for the projects.
