In Assam, fears of a major flood have intensified in Dhemaji district following reports of a temporary blockage in the upstream course of the Gai Nadi in the hill of Arunachal Pradesh. The obstruction is believed to have been caused by a massive landslide triggered by days of heavy rainfall in the region.
The Dhemaji District Administration has issued an urgent public advisory and warned that the blockage could trigger a sudden flash flood if the accumulated water is released downstream. Residents, particularly those living along riverbank, streams, wetlands, embankments and other low-lying areas, have been asked to remain on high alert.
The District Disaster Management Authority has urged people to closely follow official advisories, cooperate with local authorities and remain prepared to move to safer locations if necessary.
Meanwhile, torrential runoff from the hills has inundated many parts of Jonai Co-district in the district, with floodwaters flowing over National Highway 515 and completely disrupting vehicular movement. Rising waters have submerged homes and agricultural fields, causing significant damage to property and standing crops.
