Altogether 36 out of 40 members in the Mizoram assembly cast their votes in the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat today. An official said that voting began at the Assembly premises at 9 am under tight security, and although it was scheduled to end at 4 pm, legislators completed casting their ballots at around 11 am.
26 ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) members, including Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K. Sapdanga, and 10 main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislators cast their votes in the Parliamentary poll.
Two BJP legislators and lone Congress MLA C. Ngunlianchunga abstained from the voting, while ZPM legislator from Tuichang constituency, W. Chhuanawma, could not participate in the poll due to health issues, the official said.
The Rajya Sabha poll in Mizoram saw a two-cornered contest, with the ZPM fielding its spokesperson K. Laltluangkima, while the MNF nominated advocate and writer Zothansangi Hmar, who works for the party’s legal cell.
