The Congress and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) today announced their alliance for the upcoming Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections. In Mumbai, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi will contest 62 seats.
With regard to alliances in the remaining 28 municipal corporations in the state, positive decisions will be taken at the local level.
The alliance was formally announced at the Congress headquarters, Tilak Bhavan, by Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi State Vice President Dr Dhairyavardhan Pundkar.
Calling the alliance “natural”, Mr. Sapkal said, “Both parties are constitutionalists, their idea is to create an India that reflects the Constitution. The stance of equality, brotherhood and social justice is the same. In the 1998 and 1999 elections, both parties had an alliance.
After 25 years, the two parties have come together again. This process took some time, but a new era has begun. This is not a game of numbers, but a combination of ideas.”
Announcing that the VBA would contest 62 seats in Mumbai, Mr. Pundkar said, “Both parties have come together to stop the BJP, which is destroying the country. Mr. Sapkal took the first step for the alliance and had taken a positive stand from the beginning.”
