BJP slammed Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal over crime against women in the state. Briefing media in New Delhi on Saturday, party spokesperson Sambit Patra said, the entire country is deeply saddened by the horrific incident of rape in a law college in Kolkata.
He said, it is heartbreaking that such brutal crimes against women are repeatedly emerging from Bengal, a state where a woman serves as the Chief Minister. Mr Patra alleged that the victim’s statement suggests that it appears to be state-sponsored brutality. He also said, the main accused Manojit Mishra has reportedly been the secretary of the TMC’s student wing.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh strongly criticised chief minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of ignoring the safety of women in West Bengal.
Speaking to ANI, Ghosh said, “Mamata Banerjee does not see such incidents. Crimes against women are increasing in West Bengal, and women are afraid to step out of homes… TMC should at least condemn such acts.”
He also reacted sharply to TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee’s controversial remark on the case. Kalyan had said, “I am not an advocate into the incident that occurred at the Law College but the accused should be arrested. A few men commit this type of crime… But what can be done if a friend rapes his friend. Will the police be there in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)? This (South Calcutta Law College) is a government college. Will the police always be there?”
