Kerala is celebrating Vishu, the traditional new year, today. It is the festival of harvest and prosperity in Kerala. Lord Krishna is worshipped on this auspicious day .Vishu symbolises abundance and new beginnings.
The day begins with “Vishukkani” the first thing to be seen on the day , in which lord Krishna is adored with kani konna flowers, kani velari, fruits, vegetables , gold ,coins, etc.
In major temples like Guruvayur, Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple , Sabarimala vishu kani” and special rituals are being held today, where large number of devotees are flocking from early morning.Vishu is marked with vishu kaineettam,special sadya,lights,family get together filling the atmosphere with joy and hope for a great year ahead.
The festival coincides with the spring equinox, when day and night are of equal length, with the word “Vishu” in Sanskrit meaning “equal.” During Vishu Kani, traditional attire plays an important role. Women typically wear Kerala Sarees, while men don white lungis paired with shirts. These garments reflect the cultural heritage and add to the festive spirit.
Food is an integral part of Vishu Kani celebrations. Dishes like Vishu Kanji, Vishu Katta, and Thoran are prepared and enjoyed by families. These dishes are not only delicious but also hold cultural significance, bringing families together during the festival. The preparation of Vishu Kani is a key ritual. The eldest woman in the family gathers items needed for the arrangement. This includes fruits, vegetables, rice, and coins, all placed in the pooja area.
