Union Minister of Power, Housing, and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar today said that the Centre will consider the feasibility of introducing water metros in various coastal cities across the country.
Speaking to media persons in Kochi after experiencing Kochi Water Metro, he said the service, which has a daily average footfall of 5600, has benefitted 35 lakh people since its inception.
Noting that urbanisation is taking place at a rapid pace, the minister said he asked Kerala to send proposals for a Regional Rapid Transit System, which is more suitable to the state for passengers to go from one place to another.
Earlier, addressing a review meeting at Kavaratti in Lakshadweep, Mr. Khattar stressed the need to reduce dependency on diesel-based power by increasing renewables, enhancing battery storage, exploring wind energy, and promoting electric vehicles with solar charging stations. He said this will unlock new opportunities in Lakshadweep and added that the Centre is committed to ensuring the development and welfare of the Union Territory and its people.
