Government to come up with new set of regulations soon to counter deepfakes, says Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The Centre will soon come out with a new set of regulations to deal with deepfakes as it poses new threats to democracy and society. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw addressing media in New Delhi said that there is a need to take urgent steps to tackle deepfakes strengthen trust in our society and protect democracy.

Mr Vaishnaw said that he held a meeting with all social media platforms and the company leaders in Artificial Intelligence tools and experts on the challenges emerging out of deepfakes.

He added that during the meeting all agreed to bring the regulations based on four pillars which are the detection of deepfakes, prevention of the spread of misinformation, strengthening the reporting mechanisms, and creating awareness among the people.
 
To a question about the new regulations, the Union Minister said that the government can bring it in the form of new rules or by amending the existing rules or it can be brought in the form of new law.
