The flood situation in Assam has started showing signs of marginal improvement yesterday even as the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati has predicted heavy rainfall in most parts of the State.
On Tuesday, the number of flood-affected population has come down from 22,33,920 to 19,81,801. With one more fatality reported from Golaghat district, the death toll in the State has reached 104. Across the State, altogether 42,275 people are taking shelter in 398 relief camps.
The Brahmaputra river in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dhubri, Dhansiri in Golaghat, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur and Kopili in Nagaon district were flowing above the danger level. More than one lakh hectares of cropland also continued to be submerged under flood waters in the affected districts.
In the past 24 hours, flood waters damaged two embankments in Jorhat district and a number of roads in Chirang, Barpeta, Majuli and Goalpara districts. Incidents of flood-triggered erosion have also been reported from Biswanath district.
Large portions of Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary also continued to be under flood waters.
